Welcome to Worship at Bethel

Bethel United Methodist Church offers two Sunday Services of Worship

9:00 a.m. and 11:15 a.m.
Both of our morning worship services are very traditional and follow the same order of worship. In our worship you will find hymns, a prayer of confession, a sermon, a creed, a pastoral prayer and other congregational prayers, choir anthems, vocal, solos, and lots of bell choir & instrumental music. We do have a nursery available for small children.

The 9:00 a.m. worship service is a bit shorter in length, and contains less music. Usually, there is only one anthem at this earlier service. The music for this service is “rotating”—something different each week. At 9:00 a.m. worship, you may find a senior citizen's choir, a children’s choir, a men’s or ladies’ ensemble, and an accomplished instrumentalist playing violin, oboe, trumpet, flute, or trombone.

The 11:15 a.m. service usually lasts a few minutes longer. The service music is provided by a “resident choir”. This group is The Bethel Chancel Choir, a group of about forty experienced singers who sing from all periods of choral music—plainsong, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Modern. While especially adept at Baroque, Classical, and Romantic literature, the choir maintains a huge repertoire of modern compositions which touch on the current and changing perspective of the evolving Christian Church. They give very special treatment to hymn literature. Due to the historic setting of our home city, Charleston, we offer a great deal of historic American sacred music. The choir, soloists, or instrumentalists make music their own at six (!) points in the service—besides the Prelude and Postlude. There are always two full-length anthems and/or instrumental voluntaries within this service, four choral responses, and an ever-changing diet of music during Holy Communion.
